Most international flights from the US & Canada arrive at Mexico City Airport.

But if you want to avoid this, there are some options. Check for flights arriving at Puebla (Pue), or try flying directly from the US to Veracruz City.

Other routes might be convenient to particular cases entering Mexico and connecting domestic flights in Guadalajara (Jalisco) in the west, Monterrey (Nuevo León) in the north, or even Cancun in the east. From these three cities you connect  to Veracruz Airport flying non-stop by Click.

Where to fly to?

Recommended option:

1) Veracruz airport, either arriving directly from Houston (Continental air lines) or connecting at Mexico city airport. 

Also you can fly from several cities in the US to Guadalajara (Jalisco) in the west, Monterrey (Nuevo León) in the north, or even Cancun in the east. From Veracruz airport to Xalapa by taxi (ca us$60, one hour 15 mins ride). 

After pickup of your luggage, you will exit the arrival zone and will enter to the main hall of the airport building. The restaurant will be to your left, upstairs; the main exit will be to your right.

Before you leave the building, buy your ticket for the official taxi at any boot located by the main exit door. Ask for: "un taxi a Xalapa"; say how many in your party, and they will give you a receipt. Just a few steps away and you will be meeting your taxi driver.

Taxis are available late at night until last flight arrives.

 

If people want to share the cost of a taxi, depending on accumulated luggage, up to four people can ride to a single destination.

From Veracruz airport to Xalapa by bus

Option 1: There is a relatively new bus service provided by ADO. Small buses depart right there at the Airport,  after most flight arrivals. Upon arrival check at the ADO desk for next bus to Xalapa.

Announced schedule: 08:20, 09:20, 10:20, 12:00, 14:40, 18:00, 20:20, 21:30, 23:30.

Price ca. us$16.

Reservations: 228-842-2523 (in Xalapa) or 229 939-5571 (at the airport in Veracruz).

Buses arrive at bus terminal CAXA near downtown Xalapa. A ticket for your taxi will go anywhere from us$2 to $4, depending on distance to your hotel.

Option 2: You will need to move by taxi (ca us$10) from the airport to the bus station in Veracruz downtown (about 20 minutes).

Buses from Veracruz to Xalapa (ca us$10, 1 hour 30 mins) depart every 20 minutes by AU, ADO and ADO-GL. Check web sites under "Buses" for schedules.

Other options

2) Puebla airport, only if arriving directly. Taxi to the bus terminal CAPU (ca. 30 mins. ride). Bus lines with runs to Xalapa are AU and ADO. The trip Puebla- Xalapa by bus costs ca us$ 20 (three hours).

3) Mexico City airport. The trip Mexico -Xalapa is by bus (ca us$35, five hours). The stressfull part is moving from the airport to the bus terminal TAPO in Mexico City. Transfer by taxi to the bus terminal TAPO (about 20 minutes). Bus lines serving Xalapa are AU, ADO, ADO-GL, and UNO. The trip takes about 5 hours.
